2011-12
Keep Pinellas Beautiful (KPB) has developed a program called the “Clean and Green Team” . We are going into our second year with some exciting changes to the program. This program’s goal is to get students personally involved in litter awareness, recycling and beautification. It is
intended to serve as a follow up program to our educational classroom programs on litter. The program has three main components: litter, recycling, and beautification. The program has the following hands-on educational elements
- Strive to make and keep the school campus litter free.
- Establish and operate a plastic recycling program in their school.
- Design and create a beautification project for their school
Overview
The Clean and Green Team program is planned to be supervised by a teacher sponsor
The teacher sponsor and school Principal can determine if this will be a school wide program or limited to a certain grade level or department. The student volunteer team members can be one large group or the teacher sponsor can have student team members broken down into an individual program element.
Keep Pinellas Beautiful provides each school Clean and Green Team with green arm bands. How they are used is solely up to each teacher sponsors. Please note that the bands are numbered which offers many usages.
Keep Pinellas Beautiful request that each Clean and Green Team provide us with a quarterly report on activities during the past calendar quarter in all the elements
Once Keep Pinellas Beautiful receives a school application, the teacher sponsor will be notified and parties will arrange the delivery of supplies, a Clean and Green Folder for the teacher and KPB will conduct a brief orientation. Representatives from KPB are available by appoint to talk directly with an interest teacher sponsor or even a group of students.
2. Plastic
collection and recycling
The Clean and Green Team Program offers two methods of recycling plastic bottles and aluminum cans (if not already recycling), Each school must select one of the two methods.
Method “A” This method is the collection and recycling of plastic bottles (Pet 1 & 2) and aluminum cans from within the school its self. The collection does not have to be sorted therefore can be commingled in the same bag. Bags of plastic Pet 1 & 2 and aluminum cans will be picked up and an estimated poundage will be recorded and credited weight wise to the school.
This method is to help reduce the schools generated solid waste stream though recycling.
Method “B” This method is becoming involved in the Dream Machine Recycling Rally - KPB, therefore it is a separate program but credible also to this program. The following is a quick highlight of that program.
Note: The - KPB indicates that it is an approved part of PepsiCo National Dream Machine Recycle Rally but a special program just for Pinellas Schools that is managed by Keep Pinellas Beautiful to relieve local schoolsteachers workload having to scan recycling as required by the National Program.
Dream Machine Recycling Rally-KPB (DMRR)-KPB will:
- Require registration in the DMRR- KPB program – See Below
- Officially only recycles Plastic Bottles (Pet 1) & Alum. Cans
- Permits and encourages parents participation in the recycling efforts
- Requires student separation of collected Plastic Bottle (Pet 1 ) & Alum Cans
- Schools will earn points for cataloged items based on Weight Recycled (Pet1 only) and Alum Cans. Weighing, sorting, recording and points earned done by KPB.
- Schools will be automatically entered into both local and national awards program
- All other plastic/waste collected from parents should be bagged together and marked or label “Other” for KPB pickup..
Note: This is done because you will get PET2-5 plus non-Recyclables from some parents and your recycling efforts should not increase the schools solid waste system.
* All Clean and Green Team Leaders have to do is inform us if you want Method A or B under recycling. If you choose Method B, you will not have to register for the DMRR-KPB. We will do that for you based on your Clean and Green Team Application.
We will immediately begin coordination with you upon the receipt of either your Clean and Green Team Application or email indicating your interest in the DMRR-KPB recycling program,
1. Litter
awareness, removal, and prevention
Volunteer students on the Clean and Green Team will perform litter cleanups on their school campus as needed with their teacher’s guidance. It is recommended that students be assigned in Cleanup team of 6-8 each for campus litter removal and that they be properly brief on safety prior to doing a cleanup.
Teacher sponsors may expand this element with additional team projects, such as:
- Create litter awareness poster.
If the school so choses, they can run a contest and the top best two can be presented to KPB and if selected by KPB, will receive special recognition and their poster will be used by KPB as one of their Litter Awareness Posters.
- Study litter that is collected, discuss how it became litter, and brainstorm ways to prevent future litter.
- Strive for a Litter Free Campus - If the teacher and Clean and Green Team Members determine that they believe they have and are maintaining a “Litter Free Campus”, the teacher may apply for a KPB Litter Free Campus Certificate. The awarding of this Certification will require the review and approval of three KPB Directors, who will inspect the School Campus during the month following the date of request. More details on this recognition will be provided in the near future.
- Coloring Books: KPB will provide each school with 3 each “Litter In the Wild” coloring Books while supplies last. This is a coloring book prepared by KPB and all Clean and Green Team Teacher’s can copy them as needed.
We recommend that Teacher Sponsor check out the Educational section of www.KAB.org for additional ideas.
Supplies
KPB will supply the following supplies to each Clean and Green Team to support this element.
- 5 Gal Pails, 4 each – Collection of Campus litter - Provided by Home Depot.
- Litter Pickers, 4 each – Used only for picking up litter (not as swords or walking canes)
- Trash bags as needed. If none available from the Chief Plant Operator - Pickers and trash bags provide by Waste Management.
Note: If Cleanup teams are set up with two students per crew, one student can carry the 5 gal pail and the other student can use the picker to pickup the litter. They can swap duties as directed by the teacher
3. Beautification
project
Volunteer students on the Clean and Green Team will coordinate with their teacher sponsor on the development of a school beautification project. Once the school’s project is approved, the teacher sponsor will coordinate with KPB to obtain needed supplies and tools.
The beautification project can been any project that helps beautify the school campus or class rooms.
Once a beautification project has been determined, KPB request that a copy of the project outline be forwarded to Stoplitter@aol.com. Please indicate if you would like the assistance from a local established garden club and/or KPB’s assistance.
Most of all, please let us know when your beautification project is complete. We would like to come out and get a picture of the garden and Green Team volunteers to put on our web site. Advanced notice will assure our representative presence.
Coming Soon: We are still actively working on putting together a Florida Wild Flower project(s) for the Clean and Green Team program. We hope to have an answer soon.
